French through music, art, performance and play

French is often described as one of the most beautiful languages in the world. It is also one of the very few languages spoken all over the world – currently ranked as the sixth most widely spoken language. Learning a second language such as French is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child and Ecole Melodie is the perfect way to deliver that gift.

A child is a language-learning genius and an early start ensures your child has a strong foundation for all the many social, emotional and cognitive benefits of learning a second language. These include: cross-cultural understanding and empathy; better performance at school (including problem-solving and creative thinking); and of course, making travelling more fun later in life! At Ecole Mélodie, we teach French the way children learn best - through Music, Art, Performance and Play – using a methodology we call MAPP.

Our Approach

where children learn French through Music, Art, Performance and Play.

At Ecole Melodie we take a wholistic approach by using a variety of learning tools:

·     Visual (spatial): For students who prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.

·     Aural (auditory-musical): For students who prefer using sound and music.

·     Verbal (linguistic): For students who prefer using words, both in speech and writing.

·     Physical (kinaesthetic): For students who prefer using their body, hands and sense of touch.

·     Logical (mathematical): For students who prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.

·     Social (interpersonal): For students who prefer to learn in groups or with other people.

·     Solitary (intrapersonal): For students who prefer to work alone and use self-study.

Our approach integrates gestures for each word, a concept developed by Wendy Maxwell at AIM Languages Learning. The gestures tap into young children’s intrinsic need and love for movement and allows the gesture itself to become a memorisation and learning tool.

In our preschool classes, understanding and communication are continuously supported by gesture, music, movement and context. Children sing and dance, play instruments, use colourful props and explore pretend play with puppets and stories. Music is a constant element of your child’s class, where new vocabulary and structures are introduced with a melody and a beat – an element that further supports memorisation and learning.

Our primary school classes are also based on our MAPP methodology and fully integrate the performance-based curriculum of AIM Languages Learning. The yearly program of each class is centred around a play that the children learn through gesture and music, also integrating games and exercises that help them develop a more explicit and sophisticated understanding of reading, syntax and grammar in both French and English. At the end of the year, the children perform their play and songs for family and friends.

We understand that each child may respond to learning differently, based on his/her own preference, or predisposition.
